South Kent School Hockey Triumphs in USHL Fall Hockey Tournament

South Kent School’s 18U hockey team has emerged victorious in the 2024 USHL Fall Hockey Tournament, going undefeated through a series of intense matchups and clinching the championship in thrilling overtime fashion. This marks the team’s second tournament win, with their first triumph coming in 2022.

The renown USHL tournament, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is known for its highly competitive atmosphere and attracts top NCAA and junior scouts eager to see the nation’s best young talent. The United States Hockey League (USHL), recognized as the premier junior ice hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey, provides a crucial platform for players between 16 and 21 to showcase their skills. For many players, it is a stepping stone to NCAA Division I college hockey.

A number of South Kent players stood out throughout the tournament, with Benson Grande leading the way as the tournament’s top scorer. Over the course of five games, Grande tallied an impressive 10 points, with 6 goals and 4 assists. Jason Millett and Isaac Purdon also delivered stellar performances, each netting hat tricks during the tournament.

Both Max Kogler and Bennett Law, who rotated in goal throughout the games, were instrumental in the team’s success, consistently shutting down the opposition’s offense and maintaining an outstanding defensive presence.

South Kent’s dominance was further reflected in the stats, with several players ranking in the top 10 in various categories, a testament to the team’s depth, skill, and cohesion.

“I am very proud of this group of young men!  They worked, grew closer together, competed in every game, and got the result they deserved. We are very excited about the future of this team moving forward!” shared Andrey Uryadov, Director of South Kent School Hockey.

This victory solidifies South Kent’s reputation as a powerhouse in the midget hockey scene and continues their tradition of developing exceptional talent capable of competing at the highest levels.

Prepare to witness the hockey prowess of two South Kent hockey alumni, Joel Farabee and Shane Pinto, as they gear up to represent Team USA at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships in Czechia this May. These dynamic forwards have been on fire this season, with Farabee shining for the Philadelphia Flyers and Pinto making waves with the Ottawa Senators.

From 2014-2016, Joel Farabee lit up the score sheet, totaling 82 points in 55 games for South Kent.

Farabee also has a plethora of experience on the global stage, playing for the U17, U18, the National Team Development Program, and U20 national teams. During the 2018-2019 campaign, Farabee recorded three goals and two assists in seven games for the IIHF’s World Juniors Roster.

Most notably, he just finished a breakout season for the Flyers, scoring a career-high in goals (22) and assists (28). Farabee’s offensive ascension has raised a lot of eyebrows, making him a coveted free agent once the Stanley Cup Playoffs conclude.

Shane Pinto, a rising star, has also donned the red, white, and blue, representing the USA in the 2020 World Junior Championships. Despite being just 3 years out of the University of North Dakota, Pinto has been making a name for himself with the Ottawa Senators.

Even with only half a season under his belt, Pinto managed to rack up a career-high of 27 points over a 41-game span. His explosive style of play and knack for scoring in creative ways make him a key player in the USA’s quest for global supremacy.

Alongside other NHL superstars such as Johnny Gaudreau and Trevor Zegras, these South Kent alumni begin their chase for gold on May 10 against Sweden. For more hockey updates and information on South Kent Hockey alumni, visit our hockey page and click on the NHL Player Bios.

Boston College downs rival Boston University to win Hockey East title - The Rink Live | Comprehensive coverage of youth, junior, high school and college hockey

This past week, South Kent alum Jacob Fowler and the nation’s top-ranked Boston College Eagles completed an incredible showing at the Hockey East Tournament, going 3-0 and winning the Hockey East Championship. After winning a tightly contested matchup versus the Connecticut Huskies in the Quarterfinals 5-4, Fowler and the Eagles shipped up to TD Garden in Boston and dominated the Semifinals and Finals against UMass Amherst and Boston University respectively.

While the Eagles’ offense excelled and outscored their opponents 19-7 in the three tournament games, Jacob Fowler continued to prove why he is one of the best goalies in college hockey. Fowler played in every minute of the tournament, recording 92 saves and stopping 93% of shots faced. During the semifinals and finals, the Hockey East Goaltender of the Year turned his stellar play up a notch, tallying an impressive 62 saves on 65 shots faced. As a top-10 finalist for the Richter Award, the award for the best goalkeeper in all of college hockey, Fowler has seamlessly transitioned from the junior ranks, playing well beyond his years as an Eagle.

His resilience and maturity reigned supreme in the championship as he defeated the #2 Boston University Terriers for the third time in four meetings, bouncing back from a gut-wrenching loss in the Beanpot Tournament. Furthermore, Fowler has posted jaw dropping statlines against other national powerhouses including Michigan State, Maine, and the defending national champion Quinnipiac Bobcats, all top-10 teams. Boston College has proved to be the deepest team in college hockey throughout the 2023-24 campaign, and it would not be the case without the lionhearted performances of Fowler in his 23 games in net.

After concluding conference play with a 12-game win streak, the Eagles hold the nation’s best record at 31-5-1, earning the number 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Jacob Fowler will look to continue bolstering his resume as he and the Eagles will face off against midwest giant Michigan Tech in the Providence Regional Semifinal this Friday, March 29. Puck drop is at 2:00 on ESPNU, as the Eagles look to climb the mountaintop and become NCAA Tournament Champions.
