South Kent School is thrilled to announce our first-ever alumni reunion in Asia, kicking off in Shanghai on the weekend of March 29, 2025, as part of our Centennial celebrations. This historic gathering will honor over 100 years of South Kent’s legacy and strengthen our global alumni connections. Following Shanghai, the reunion tour will continue with alumni gatherings in Seoul and Tokyo.

We are launching the event in February with a special talk by South Kent alumnus Professor Sukehiro Hasegawa ’62, who will share stories of his time on the Hillside and insights from his esteemed career in international diplomacy. Reflecting on the upcoming event, Professor Hasegawa said, “South Kent instilled in me a deep sense of curiosity and resilience. I am honored to share my journey and discuss how the lessons I learned on the Hillside have shaped my work in international diplomacy.”

Joining us from the Hillside will be Head of School Brian Sullivan, The Reverend Steve Klots, and South Kent alumni leaders Dillon Duncan ’04 and Rich Brande ’88. Reflecting on this milestone event, Brian Sullivan shared, “South Kent’s influence extends far beyond the Hillside, and it’s truly special to bring our global community together to celebrate a century of excellence. This reunion is a testament to the lasting impact of a South Kent education.”

The Shanghai event will feature a variety of exciting activities, including a scenic boat cruise and an evening of karaoke. The highlight of the weekend will be a dinner hosted by Ron Xin Wang ’11 at his renowned restaurant, the Shanghai Yichun Garden Seafood Restaurant. Attendees will have the chance to reconnect with fellow alumni, share memories, and celebrate South Kent’s enduring spirit.

Following the gathering in China, the team will travel to Seoul and Tokyo for additional alumni events, further strengthening the bonds within our international community.

The Reverend Klots emphasized the significance of this reunion, stating, “The spirit of South Kent is one of lifelong brotherhood, and it’s incredible to see that bond transcending borders. This journey will not only reconnect alumni but also inspire future generations of South Kent students.”

We are excited to bring the South Kent family together in Asia for the first time. Stay tuned for more details, and we look forward to seeing you there!

South Kent School is proud to announce a special evening on the Hillside as we welcome back distinguished alumnus, comedian “Sarge” (or “Picky” a name given by George Bartlett) Steven Pickman, class of 1979. On the evening of September 23rd, Sarge will host a Masterclass live in the Brown Gym, sharing not only his unique brand of humor but also the personal journey that has shaped him into the multi-talented performer, author, and motivational speaker he is today.  Many may recognize Sarge as a “Notable Alumni” featured in the Old Building.

Sarge is known for delighting audiences of all ages with humor that comes straight from the heart. He’s not just a comedian – he’s a self-taught piano savant, an engaging motivational speaker, and the author of Black Boychick, a memoir that chronicles his life’s ups and downs with both laughter and wisdom. His comedic style, often compared to that of Don Rickles, blends rapid-fire observations with a spontaneous, uproarious energy, leaving audiences enthralled and entertained.

Born in Miami Beach, Florida, during the Civil Rights Movement to a Jewish mother and a Black father, Sarge’s journey was marked by its challenges from the start. Adopted by a loving family in Great Neck, Long Island, he was raised in an upper-middle-class Jewish household. It was here, at the age of six, that his musical gift first appeared. After attending a Broadway performance of The Sound of Music,Sarge sat down at the piano and began playing songs from the show entirely by ear, a talent he would develop over the years.

South Kent School Alumni shares his story on the Hillside.

As he grew up, Sarge’s comedic talents were just as evident as his musical skills. By age seven, he was cracking jokes and doing impressions at his grandfather’s card games. His exposure to live entertainment in the Catskill Mountains ignited a passion for performing that would shape his future.

Sarge’s path, however, was not without its difficulties. As an adult, he wrestled with feelings of confusion and identity, having been raised with little connection to his Black heritage. These internal conflicts led him down a dangerous road of addiction and homelessness. Yet, on December 26, 1990, Sarge experienced a life-changing epiphany. He committed himself to sobriety, and from that day on, has been dedicated to helping others overcome addiction, even pioneering a groundbreaking “Comedy Therapy” in recovery centers.

After attending South Kent School, where he was honored for his musical talent and lettered in football, Sarge went on to study at Boston University’s School of Public Communication, where he was dubbed “Sarge” by the football guys on his floor. His career in entertainment took him from working as a talent representative to performing on some of the most famous stages in the world. He’s shared the spotlight with legends like Aretha Franklin, Paul Anka, and Natalie Cole and has performed for our troops in Iraq.

Today, Sarge is a highly sought-after motivational speaker, bringing humor and healing to audiences across the country. His work has even extended to prison recovery programs, with his documentary Sarge Behind Bars receiving critical acclaim.

In his return to South Kent School, Sarge is set to inspire and entertain, giving students a firsthand look at how humor, perseverance, and talent can overcome even the greatest obstacles. We are thrilled to welcome him back to the Hillside for what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Hillside Book Club

Our Hillside Book Club continues to be a great success. It is an easy-going group that meets virtually during the year and discusses books that have a South Kent connection.

Our last book was The Secret Life of the American Musical by Jack Viertel. Great stories were shared about The Playhouse thanks to Marge Smith who led the discussion.

With alumni military service in mind, our next book is The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz by Erik Larson. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The author of The Devil in the White City and Dead Wake delivers an intimate chronicle of Winston Churchill and London during the Blitz—an inspiring portrait of courage and leadership in a time of unprecedented crisis.

The plan is to hold this book club meeting over the winter when SKS Trustee Ted D’Atri ’82 will lead the discussion. This will be another Zoom call not to be missed; I hope you will join.

Interested in joining our upcoming discussion or have a book you would like to suggest? Have a question about our book club? Please email me at haasej@southkentschool.org.

The club’s most recent meeting, held on July 23rd, featured an engaging review of “The Secret Life of the American Musical: How Broadway Shows are Built” by Jack Viertel.

This session was particularly special, as it included the cast and crew of South Kent’s 1963 performance of “Guys and Dolls.” Attendees had the unique opportunity to delve into Viertel’s exploration of Broadway’s inner workings while reminiscing about the memorable production of “Guys and Dolls” and other performances held over the years in The Playhouse.

Interested in attending the July 23rd call or joining future meetups? Please email Jennifer Haase at haasej@southkentschool.org to RSVP. Once your response is received, you will be provided with the necessary call-in information.
